Taking Leave
"Thank you, sir!"
Li Bai was delighted to have scored four days off.
Though there was hardly anything to do most days, he still had to clock in and out from nine to five. He didn't have to be at his post, but he still had to punch the clock.
Now that he had leave, he didn't even have to clock in. He could head straight out of camp and have some fun—and even stay out all night.
Luan Zhengwei reminded him, "You still have to file the paperwork."
He had agreed to approve the leave, but he hadn't said Li Bai could skip the process just by asking for it.
"Got it. I'll go right now!"
Li Bai vanished on the spot.
"Wait. You're taking leave again? Are you bored sitting around in camp? Somalia's in turmoil everywhere. Aren't you worried you'll run into danger?"
When Li Bai came to get his standard leave form signed, Li Feng, the head of the Medical Team, eyed him suspiciously.
Somalia wasn't a tourist destination, and it had no decent attractions. It was mostly a desolate wilderness, teeming with packs of wild animals, tribes whose intentions were unclear, dangerous local warlords, and mercenaries. It was a lawless place.
Even Mogadishu, the capital, where the government forces had the strongest control, was still filled with the sound of gunfire and explosions every day. Every so often, there was even a live-action bomb show.
Foreigners weren't the only ones living day to day. Even locals lived with no guarantee they'd see tomorrow, their lives hanging in the balance. With the country in constant turmoil, how could anything possibly improve?
