The actual distance from the dune where Li Bai and the others had set up camp to the oasis containing the secret laboratory of Jaharlal Choudhury, the "Venom" Saint, was at most a hundred kilometers.
But when Car One, led by Li Bai and Diana, came within two kilometers of the oasis, it took everyone on a huge loop around it. They didn't stop until the vehicles' fuel tanks were nearly empty.
By then, the horizon was beginning to brighten. They had driven all night.
They didn't pitch their tents again on the uneven sand. Instead, people lay scattered in every direction, snoring in waves.
After running for their lives all night, most of them were utterly exhausted. As soon as they were told they could rest, they collapsed onto the sand without a second thought, using the sky as their blanket and the ground as their bed, and promptly fell asleep.
Everyone was doing the same, from the Dragon Knight Order's armed personnel led by Schwartz von Paladin to Diana's subordinates. They were all trying to make the most of their time, restoring their energy and strength for the fierce battle that was sure to come.
Standing beside Li Bai, Diana peered openly at the oasis through binoculars and said in puzzlement, "It's so quiet!"
She couldn't see a single zombie. The oasis was as peaceful as a paradise, yet there wasn't a living thing in sight.
"And there are no Armored Nightmares either. The Saint's Association's drones should be airborne by now. I'll ask."
If not for the satellite positioning and the buildings she could see surrounded by lush green trees, Li Bai would have thought they'd gone to the wrong oasis.
