Chapter 62 - Suicide by Proxy
The tea merchant from southern Yunnan, Sima Dongsheng, had inexplicably jumped into a river and died after Naughty Kid stole one of his CDs. Surely he hadn't been so upset over a music CD that he'd decided to end his life?
The more Li Bai thought about it, the stranger it seemed. After a moment's thought, he said, "Xiao Wang, could you take me to see him?"
"See who?"
Officer Xiao Wang had a feeling he knew what Li Bai was about to say.
"Sima Dongsheng! The one who jumped into the river."
Li Bai felt a vague unease. He thought he wouldn't be at ease until he checked for himself.
"But he's dead! You really want to see him?"
Officer Xiao Wang was taken aback. What was there to see in a dead person? No normal person would make such a request.
"Is it not allowed? Couldn't I go in the name of assisting with the investigation? Our hospital works with the Public Security Bureau on things like this all the time. They should approve."
Li Bai thought his request might be against regulations, so he immediately came up with an excuse.
As for dead people, he'd seen mountains of corpses and seas of blood for real. One or two bodies were nothing to be afraid of. If a ghost showed up, so much the better. He wasn't afraid of the living, so why should he fear a dead ghost? He'd just beat it into submission and send it off to reincarnate and start over. After all, killing ghosts wasn't against the law.
"Hey, there aren't that many rules. If you want to see him, I'll take you. But I'm warning you: if you have nightmares tonight, don't blame me."
