Kobe City
"Not good!"
After eating a basket of soup dumplings, two skewers of rice cake balls, a skewer of grilled chicken, and a box of takoyaki... and spending about five thousand yen sweeping through Nanjing Street, Su Mei gave her verdict.
"Mm-hmm!"
Li Bai held a huge pile of meat buns and ate with gusto.
At 500 yen apiece, the Kobe Beef buns had cost him one Fukuzawa Yukichi note. He'd ordered twenty outright. The young man selling buns in Japan had stared at him for a long while before getting them ready.
A huge "god" was printed on the wrapping around each beef bun. Anyone who didn't know better might've thought the Japanese had chopped up their own gods and turned them into buns. That was a far more impressive claim than Sun Erniang's human flesh buns.
Su Mei took one bite and immediately felt awful. It was too greasy and too sweet; she couldn't eat it.
She'd originally wanted to try the world-famous Kobe Beef, but after tasting the buns, she'd probably need some time to work up to it.
"We'll grab a boxed meal from the supermarket later. Tonight, we'll have sukiyaki, plus Teppanyaki Kobe Beef. There's a place right by the hotel."
After quickly polishing off the beef buns, Li Bai pulled out his phone and swiped through the digital map, checking out one restaurant after another.
A taste of Nanjing Street was enough. He didn't want to come back a second time.
Most of the food was Chinese street food, and it all tasted the same.
Could you imagine paying the equivalent of eighteen yuan for a Meat Bun in Japan when they cost only two yuan each in China?
Who'd be foolish enough to come back and get ripped off twice?
