The War Begins
The searing wave of heat that slammed into them from behind sent Chairman Demville and Dr. Moller crashing hard onto the asphalt road. In that instant, it felt as though someone had viciously slapped their very souls.
Their ears rang violently. Dizzy and disoriented, Demville felt someone desperately dragging him along. He instinctively followed, rolling and scrambling forward, though every movement was agonizingly difficult.
After a while, his hearing gradually returned. He could make out all kinds of hoarse, desperate screams, as well as gunfire that grew fiercer by the second.
"Sir! Sir! Sir..."
Demville kept blinking forcefully until he finally saw that his driver and bodyguard were the ones dragging him. Yet he still could not hear what the man was saying. One moment, his ears were utterly silent; the next, they buzzed so loudly that nothing was clear.
The rocket explosion behind him had shaken Chairman Demville severely, leaving his reactions noticeably sluggish.
"Broney..."
The instant Demville opened his mouth, a burst of fire swallowed the driver and bodyguard's upper body.
Another rocket exploded nearby. The frenzied metal fragments caught the driver and bodyguard squarely, and the attackers had clearly realized what the bodyguards were trying to do. The rocket launchers they had revealed began concentrating their fire.
The deafening blast and violent shock wave struck the chairman of the Lihai'er Conglomerate like a heavy blow, pushing him several meters through the swelling wave of air.
Just before he lost consciousness, the last thing he saw was the driver and bodyguard's remains below the waist. His upper body had vanished completely.
My God!
"My God!"
Someone suddenly began praying beside him. Demville struggled to open his eyes, and pain surged through him like a tide, as though his entire body had been shattered.
"Hiss!"
