"Can't we go around?"
One look at the map was enough for the battle-hardened veterans to see that this would be a tough fight. Their own formation would be difficult to deploy, while the enemy held every advantage in terrain. The scales were tipped against them—by a lot.
Someone scoffed. "Where do you think we can go around?"
Another general muttered, "If we could just strap a pair of wings onto the whole army—whoosh!—we'd fly right over."
Shen Tang silently snapped a piece of chalk into sections and handed one to each of them. "Fly, fly, fly. You'd be midair practice targets for the enemy archers! With a formation that dense, even a blind man could draw his bow with his feet and skewer five or six people with one arrow."
A piece of chalk smacked against someone's helmet with a sharp crack. Another man, who wasn't wearing one, took his piece on the forehead, leaving a dusty mark. It didn't hurt, but being laughed at by the colleagues around him was a bit humiliating. He stammered, "I was just saying..."
His mouth had gotten ahead of his brain.
Anyone with half a brain would know it wasn't possible.
If Martial Gall Warriors were acting alone, they had to reach a certain rank before they could take to the air. How long they could stay aloft also depended on their reserves of martial energy and how quickly they used it, not to mention fighting and fending off enemies while airborne. If an entire army formation took flight together, the bar was lower, but it wasn't as if there were no requirements at all. Even in Kang, only a handful of elite battalions could pull it off.
