Wei Shou, who had caught Chu Yao's eye, let out a huge sneeze.
His brows furrowed like Psyduck's. One hand tugged at the bushy whiskers on his cheek while the other gripped the transfer order Zheng Qiao had given him. Jiang Ao's seventh-day memorial had barely passed, and Zheng Qiao had already parachuted in someone to replace him. The new arrival hadn't come charging out of the pass to attack the enemy with an overbearing air, but he was quite dissatisfied with Wei Shou's defensive, never-offensive approach. He seemed like another hot-tempered sort.
The deputy general tried to reassure Wei Shou. "Jiang Ao's death dealt Chaoli Pass a heavy blow, and our strength has yet to recover. The new garrison commander shouldn't launch an attack rashly. General, you can rest easy for now."
If Chaoli Pass's elite troops hadn't been wounded last time, the newcomer would probably have sent troops out to show off, too. It was an ill wind that blew some good. Who knew that Wei Shou would slam the order down on the desk and say, "How the hell am I supposed to worry about this or that right now?"
His subordinate was baffled. "Then why are you frowning, General?"
Wei Shou let out a long sigh. "I'm worried about Chu Liangliang... that dog across the way, Chu Wu Hui. I fell for one of his tricks before, and in a moment of carelessness, I let him take my wife away. Zheng Qiao sent Jiang Ao to force Chaoli Pass to send out troops; that was all part of his scheme. What's more, Jiang Ao was useless and got himself killed. How could Zheng Qiao not grow suspicious? And now he's ordered me back..."
The subordinate understood a little.
"Are you worried the Sovereign will punish you?"
