Yue Qingcang entered the army at sixteen, became a captain at twenty, a brigadier general at twenty-five, and took command of the Northern Border at thirty. During ten years of command, he fought 137 battles without defeat and drove the Northern Desert beyond the Great Wall. Of the 80,000 soldiers under his command, 10,000 died in battle and another 10,000 were crippled. 110

He regarded the Yue Family Army not as natural-born elites, but as ordinary people—farmers, blacksmiths, and shopkeepers displaced by war. He shared a personal bond with his soldiers and remained haunted by the dead left in unmarked graves along the Northern Border. 133

Yue Qingcang is a tall, middle-aged man whose bearing remains imposing even when grievously wounded. His sharp, hawk-like eyes and battlefield killing intent leave a strong impression on guards and prisoners alike. 109

At his retrial, Yue Qingcang denies the charges and demands that the alleged letters be properly examined. He argues that his deep strike into enemy territory followed Ministry of War orders and that his survival after capture was not proof of betrayal. 148
