Consort Hua's hands and feet were slightly swollen, her eyes red-rimmed and her expression haggard. She stared toward Consort Mei's residence with bone-deep hatred and grief. Her belly swelled prominently; she had been pregnant for quite some time, and Meng Qi could sense the new life stirring within without even trying.

The current emperor had been married for over a decade and had been on the throne for a good while, yet he still had no children, which left him quite anxious.
