Numerous symbols were interspersed among the charts. Judging roughly, the triangles probably represented key points, the wavy lines seemed to mark areas of uncertainty, and the arrows clearly linked related concepts.

Looking at the contents of the notebook, Hokubu Genkoma seemed to glimpse Yasui Makoto as a boy, frowning in thought beneath a desk lamp. Sometimes he wrote rapidly, sometimes he paused, and occasionally his eyes lit up when he thought of some crucial point.
