Background

Astoria was raised in the influential pure-blood Greengrass family. Her parents gave her a strict aristocratic upbringing, teaching her formal etiquette and requiring her to maintain the image of a proper young lady at social events. She was nevertheless sheltered from ordinary wizarding life and had few opportunities to speak freely or make friends. Her older sister, Daphne Greengrass, was said not to like her. 84 88 161

She first appeared during the Greengrasses' visit to Malfoy Manor, where the two families considered a political alliance. Astoria politely introduced herself to Draco Malfoy with a curtsy and gave him her nickname, “Nia.” 84 She later met Harry Potter at the Malfoys' home and became openly interested in him after learning he was the Boy Who Lived. 85 86

At the Quidditch World Cup, Astoria overcame her initial shyness while speaking with Harry. The two bonded over Greek mythology and Muggle culture; Astoria was particularly pleased that Harry recognized the origin and significance of her name. 88

Astoria entered Hogwarts as a first-year after her father insisted that she needed to develop outside the family home.
