The Nine Alignments
1. Lawful Good (LG).
Lawful Good creatures strive to do what society deems right. Those who fight injustice without hesitation and protect the innocent may be Lawful Good.
2. Neutral Good (NG).
Neutral Good creatures do as much good as they can, acting within the limits of rules but not feeling bound by them. Kind-hearted individuals who help others according to their needs may be Neutral Good.
3. Chaotic Good (CG).
Chaotic Good creatures act according to their conscience, caring little about what others think. Someone who robs a cold-hearted baron's tax collector to use the stolen funds to help the poor may be Chaotic Good.
4. Lawful Neutral (LN).
Lawful Neutral individuals act according to law, tradition, or personal codes. Someone who follows a strict set of conduct guidelines and is not swayed by the pleas of those in danger or the temptations of evil may be Lawful Neutral.
5. Absolute Neutral (N).
The Absolute Neutral alignment belongs to those who prefer to avoid moral questions, are unwilling to take sides, and act according to what seems best at the moment.
Those weary of moral speculation may be Absolute Neutral.
This is the initial state for most ordinary people, with survival as the primary goal and the avoidance of alignment conflicts.
6. Chaotic Neutral (CN).
Chaotic Neutral creatures act on their whims, believing their personal freedom is more important than anything else.
A wandering rogue who makes a living by their wits may be Chaotic Neutral.
7. Lawful Evil (LE).
Lawful Evil creatures methodically obtain what they want within the constraints of tradition, loyalty, or order.
A noble who exploits the citizenry while conspiring to seize power may be Lawful Evil.
8. Neutral Evil (NE).
Neutral Evil is the alignment of those who do not care about the destruction they cause in the pursuit of what they want.
A criminal who robs and kills as they please may be Neutral Evil.
9. Chaotic Evil (CE).
Chaotic Evil creatures commit violence at will, driven by hatred or bloodlust.
A villain dedicated to plots of revenge and destruction may be Chaotic Evil.
Unaligned Creatures
The vast majority of creatures lacking rational thought capacity have no alignment; they are unaligned.
For example, a shark is a fierce predator, but it is not evil; therefore, it is unaligned.
