In the original story, Peterson had been tempted by Lena into using the Centipede Serum. He became Skye's first target after joining S.H.I.E.L.D., then got drawn into the conflict between Hydra and S.H.I.E.L.D. and became one of Hydra's augmented soldiers. After going through all sorts of events, he eventually became part of S.H.I.E.L.D.
But now, New York was almost entirely under Osborn's control. Lena had not spread the Centipede Serum in New York, so he had not gone down that path.
This was Skye and Peterson's first meeting.
"Uh... Officer Peterson, how did you become like this?" After saying that, she realized her words might have sounded ambiguous and hurriedly added, "I mean, this equipment looks really cool, but..."
Peterson smiled, not minding Skye's wording. "I know. Not many normal people would modify themselves like this—but this equipment wasn't cheap.
"It was because of a fire. I happened to be passing by, and a mother was crying downstairs that her child was trapped inside, so I rushed in."
"Wait, was that in New York?" Skye asked, somewhat confused.
"That's right. The Battle of New York had just ended, and the city was still being rebuilt." Peterson nodded and continued telling his story.
Peterson successfully found the child after rushing into the fire, but the flames blocked the way back.
