Decades ago, Aetherdan Energy discovered Zero Matter during a nuclear test. A woman came into contact with the substance and gained the ability to absorb matter. Zero Matter altered her mind, making her desperate to open dimensional rifts and obtain more Zero Matter.
After a series of conflicts and studies, Howard Stark successfully invented a device capable of using Zero Matter to open a rift into the Dark Dimension. Yet when the dimensional rift opened, the Dark Energy did not flow out as the woman had imagined.
Instead, the Zero Matter within her flowed in reverse, and the rift Howard had opened was not large enough for demons to reach their hands through and force it wider like this.
The reason was that Ancient One had actually been secretly controlling the course of events during that incident.
