The Quantum Virus appeared to be some kind of biological virus, but it was actually a Consciousness Virus. Its essence was highly concentrated energy from the Quantum Realm that could freely infiltrate living organisms.
Most of it was merely pure energy, but some carried large amounts of meaningless information. Once it entered the brain, it burned away a creature's consciousness, leaving behind only its appetite.
At the same time, this energy served the consciousness, altering the organism's genes and body, allowing it to perform acts ordinary creatures found difficult—like still thinking about "eating" after losing an arm, running at incredible speed, and possessing immense strength.
Strictly speaking, continuing to move after losing a leg, a hand, or even with one's head half hanging off one's neck was not that difficult. But after artistic embellishment, the concept of "zombies" did indeed become terrifying.
But what people truly feared about zombies was that the virus assimilated humans. Like the Quantum Virus, its true horror lay in its effect on consciousness.
"In the Quantum Realm, everything changes..." Pym muttered.
When Pym entered the Quantum Realm to search for Janet, he had briefly become lost. But Janet saved him. A force entered his body and helped him regain clarity instead of losing himself.
At the time, he had asked his wife: How did she do that?
And Janet had replied, "I'm not the same person I was thirty years ago, Hank."
"She once said that part of the change was adaptive, but the other part was..."

Harry finished the rest for him, because he knew of that conversation too. Janet had said exactly that in the Ant-Man 2 film, and her expression at the time had been somewhat... strange.
Still, no one knew what had truly happened.
