The S.H.I.E.L.D. office. Fury was processing documents. Because of the Abomination incident, the military had lost a lot of face and was now trying to distance themselves from it, especially from General Ross.
While the military brass were busy shifting blame amongst themselves, they naturally had no energy left to deal with the severe aftermath left by the Abomination. Thus, the mess naturally fell to S.H.I.E.L.D. to clean up.
Of course, this was also partly because Fury had proactively stepped forward to take responsibility. Although cleaning up the military's mess had nearly driven Fury to his breaking point, he wouldn't pass up an opportunity like this to suppress the military and increase S.H.I.E.L.D.'s authority.
The rewards were commensurate with the effort. At the very least, Fury felt he would have a much stronger case the next time he requested money and personnel from the World Security Council.
Knock knock! A knock came at the door. Fury looked up and saw Coulson standing at the entrance.
"Ah, Coulson. Come in," Fury said, leaning back and putting down the documents in his hands.
"Is there anything you need to report? I've almost finished processing these files anyway."
"Nothing much, Director," Coulson replied, walking over and neatly placing a large stack of documents on the desk.
"Hill just asked me to deliver some files to you. She hopes you can process them as soon as possible."
"What the hell? All of these? And there's so much more?" Looking at the files, which were nearly half a meter high, Fury felt an urge to flip the table.
"Where's Hill? Given the confidentiality level of these documents, she could have handled them entirely with her Level 9 clearance. Why send them to me?" Fury frowned as he glanced at the files.
"I've noticed a significant drop in her efficiency these past few days. Now she's just not working at all. This won't do. Something will go wrong, and she'll be held responsible in the future," Fury said, tapping the table.
"Hill she..." Looking at the displeased Fury, Coulson hesitated before saying, "It's that time of the month for Hill, so she took today off. And she also asked me to request leave for tomorrow and the day after."
Fury: "...Damn it!"
Fury slumped back into his chair, feeling completely drained.
"Has Lu Yifang arrived at S.H.I.E.L.D.?" No longer wanting to think about these endless files, Fury felt he should shift his focus.
"Lu Yifang is at S.H.I.E.L.D. right now," Coulson replied.
"And where is he now?" Fury asked curiously. Although Lu Yifang was nominally part of an anti-Hulk emergency team, holding the title of captain, the decision had been made too hastily, and the official organizational structure hadn't been finalized yet. Therefore, besides being affiliated with S.H.I.E.L.D. and drawing a salary from them, Lu Yifang was essentially a free agent. He had no direct superior within S.H.I.E.L.D., no office, and no colleagues. So, what was he doing now?
"I believe he's in the recuperation area," Coulson said after recalling for a moment.
"Why would a normal person go to the recuperation area?" Fury asked, puzzled.
"It's probably..." Coulson paused. He really wanted to say, How should I know? You've given me so many tasks these past few days, I'm swamped. Do you expect me to add monitoring Lu Yifang's every move to my workload?
Do you think I'm The Flash from the comics, or can I create multiple shadow clones? (Wait! When did I start watching that anime? Did I forget because I was on too many missions?)
Of course, Coulson only thought these things to himself. After all, his promotion request was still pending with this guy. Under duress, Coulson had no choice but to bow down to the powerful Bald Head.
"Perhaps it's because everything in the recuperation area is provided free of charge," Coulson guessed, recalling a scene he had witnessed earlier.
"What?" Fury was taken aback. A scene flashed through his mind: Lu Yifang lying on a chair by a swimming pool, a parasol shading him, leisurely sipping a drink and eating sliced fruit.
The thought of it made Fury unable to sit still. Damn it, I'm working myself to death here, barely functioning. And that guy is doing nothing, enjoying S.H.I.E.L.D.'s benefits? What's even more infuriating is that this freeloader actually had the audacity to demand a monthly salary of fifty thousand dollars from me!
This is outrageous! S.H.I.E.L.D. absolutely cannot tolerate such a powerful individual! We need to find something for this guy to do.
"Immediately, bring him to me right now," Fury yelled at Coulson, his face contorted with rage.
"Understood, Director." Seeing Fury in a rage, Coulson immediately took out his phone and dialed Lu Yifang's number. The call was quickly connected, but it went straight to a busy signal.
I hope this kid answers quickly. Fury's anger has serious consequences, Coulson prayed silently for Lu Yifang.
Perhaps Coulson's prayer worked, because the next moment, the phone was connected.
"Yifang, you..."
"You what? State your name and give me a convincing reason within three seconds, or I'll make you regret it!!!" Coulson's words were cut off by an even angrier voice.
The voice, filled with boundless rage and resentment, was even more intense than Fury's. For some reason, hearing that voice reminded Coulson of a time when Fury had forcibly canceled his leave halfway through a date.
"This is Coulson. The Director asked me to call you. I'll transfer the call to him now." Although he didn't know why Lu Yifang was so angry, Coulson wisely passed the buck to Fury.
"Hello!" Fury, unaware of the situation, took the phone.
"Egghead, what the hell do you want!"
"Son of a bitch!!" Fury exploded. This was the first time anyone had dared to speak to him like that. Kid, you're asking for trouble!
But he was, after all, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He had some composure. He wouldn't stoop to arguing with Lu Yifang, especially since he could tell Lu Yifang was genuinely furious.
This left Fury bewildered. What's going on? I just asked Coulson to make a call for you. Did it disrupt some major life event? Is it worth getting this angry? I can hear the gritting of teeth through the phone!
Regardless, he needed to see the guy first.
"I don't care what you're doing. Come see me immediately~now," Fury said coldly before slamming the phone onto the table and hanging up.
As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he couldn't lose face, even if he was being yelled at.
Coulson, who had been watching the scene unfold, winced. It wasn't because of Fury's imposing aura, but because... that phone was his.
Meanwhile, Lu Yifang looked at the disconnected phone. After a sigh, he finally turned to Katie and said something before heading towards Fury's office.
