"How much longer until we rendezvous with Lu Yifang and the others?" Jean asked Storm from inside the fighter jet.
"We should be there soon. According to the coordinates, they've already stopped. They're probably waiting for us to join them," Storm said, staring at the radar.
"At least that's some good news. I have to say, today has been absolutely terrible. On one of my rare missions, I actually ran into this much trouble." Jean let out a long breath and turned to look toward the corner at the back of the cabin.
A blue-skinned man with a tail was crouching there, strange patterns etched across his skin. At first glance, anyone would have thought his appearance was that of a devil, yet he behaved like a devout believer, earnestly offering prayers of repentance.
The Mutant before them was Nightcrawler, the assassin who had attacked the president and possessed teleportation abilities. At first, Storm and Jean had assumed he was either insane or some edgy teenager bent on taking revenge against society. Yet after actually speaking with him, they realized just how wrong they had been. He had been rejected by ordinary people his entire life, yet he still carried a heart willing to forgive the world. Setting aside his appearance, he could have been made a saint if they threw him into the Vatican.
According to Nightcrawler's memories, he had most likely been controlled when he attempted to assassinate the president. Jean and Storm had intended to investigate that lead further, only to receive news that their home base had nearly been wiped out.
Fortunately, Lu Yifang had resolved the matter in time. Otherwise, if a group of special forces soldiers had stormed into the school, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Just as the two of them were
