History

The Senju and Uchiha clans were sworn rivals during the Warring States Period. Opposing nations hired them against one another, and the Senju drew on allied clans—including the Uzumaki, Sarutobi, and Shimura—to gain the advantage. Under Hashirama and Tobirama, the Senju defeated the Uchiha; the clans subsequently allied and established the Leaf Village 151 389 657.

Tobirama later placed the clan’s secret techniques in Konoha’s Scroll of Seals so more village ninja could learn advanced ninjutsu. He acknowledged that this strengthened Konoha while eroding the Senju’s particular advantage. By the Ninja Village era, Tsunade was the clan’s most prominent member, and its reputation had declined despite its remaining jonin 373 461.

Relations with the Uchiha remained strained in Konoha. Senju elders opposed Jiraiya’s decision to take Shisui Uchiha as a disciple, while clan members had generally kept their distance from the Uchiha even when both served the village 332 333 464. During the Ninja Alliance’s battle against Sasori, Mengmao led Senju reinforcements to the Uchiha’s aid. Their genjutsu and medical treatment helped save injured Uchiha, marking a public break from that pattern 462 464.

Abilities and Techniques

Physical strength and taijutsu

• Senju members are described as having greater physical energy and physical qualities than ordinary ninja. Even clan genjutsu specialists are skilled in taijutsu 450.
• Tobirama considered the Eight Gates well suited to the clan, but few members trained in it because of its demanding requirements 450.

Ninjutsu and genjutsu

• The clan was historically known for its extensive range of techniques. Its techniques placed in the Scroll of Seals include Shadow Clone, Flying Thunder God, Impure World Reincarnation, and Bringer-of-Darkness 373.
• Senju genjutsu jonin can use Bringer-of-Darkness. In the battle against Sasori, one caster deprived him of sight while leaving allies able to see 461 464.

Medical ninjutsu

• The Senju are closely associated with Leaf Hospital and advanced medical ninjutsu 461 464.
• Senju medical ninja treated poisoned Uchiha during the alliance battle; Delicate Illness Extraction removed toxins without requiring an antidote 464.

Wood Style

• Hashirama’s Wood Style was exceptional, not an ability inherited by all his direct descendants. Tsunade and Nawaki did not inherit it 151.
• Hashirama accepted Yamato into the clan after completing his previously incomplete Wood Style abilities 529.
• Later, many Senju members received White Zetsu Cells, allowing Wood Style to become a clan-wide ability through transplantation rather than ordinary inheritance 685.

Notable Members and Relations

• Hashirama Senju — clan leader during its victories over the Uchiha and the First Hokage; spared Madara to end the clans’ conflict 389.
• Tobirama Senju — Hashirama’s brother and the Second Hokage; transferred clan techniques to the village and remained deeply involved in clan affairs 373 685.
• Tsunade — Hashirama’s granddaughter and, for a time, the clan’s most prominent living member. Her relationship with Ryobu Uchiha drew opposition from Senju traditionalists 369 461.
• Yu Sun — clan head who sought to restore the Senju’s reputation through battle 154 461.
• Mengmao — elder who chose to support Uchiha fighters rather than preserve the old rivalry 461 462.
