Liao Wu was born into an Uchiha collateral branch and was a distant relative of Mikoto Uchiha. His body was chronically weak; doctors expected him to die before forty, and his inability to perform ninjutsu or awaken the Sharingan damaged his reputation within the clan. 2 4 471

Before becoming a combatant, Liao Wu worked as a medical ninja at Konoha Hospital. Patients regarded his methods as harsh but effective, and he publicly supported Tsunade’s proposal that every mission squad should include a medical ninja. 2 3 He also used medical ninjutsu to treat Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō-related eye pain. 275

Liao Wu eventually developed or acquired forbidden techniques connected to life extension and bloodline theft. When his activities were exposed, Konoha branded him a rogue ninja; he fled toward the Land of Grass, only to be intercepted by Orochimaru and later drawn into Madara Uchiha’s control. 1 2 3

He lies easily to stronger opponents, uses disguises to manipulate allies and enemies, and treats political chaos as an opportunity to expand his influence. 4 154 340 His stated opposition to Madara’s Moon Eye Plan is practical: he wants power, status, and tangible rewards in reality rather than an ideal life inside an illusion. 578

He is also prone to arrogance after gaining strength.
