"Ugh." Ye Chen thought of the buns he'd just eaten and felt his stomach turn. No wonder he'd never tasted meat like that before. The filling had been human flesh.
"Y-you—you're a monster! You must've eaten plenty of human flesh before. So why are you suddenly getting sick now?" the landlady asked, staring at Ye Chen in terror and muttering under her breath.
"Bullshit!" Ye Chen shouted. "I'm no monster! You two are the ones running a human flesh bun shop right under the Imperial City's nose. You're worse than monsters!"
Just as Ye Chen finished speaking, he suddenly heard some movement outside the kitchen. He immediately fell silent. The landlady had been badly frightened by Ye Chen, so she didn't dare make a sound either.
"Thud, thud." Footsteps sounded outside the kitchen, each step striking the floor. For some reason, they sounded incredibly heavy, as if someone with a massive frame were walking.
Ye Chen drew the kitchen knife from behind his back and waved it at the landlady, signaling for her not to move. Then he went to the kitchen door and peered through the crack. Outside, he saw a "person" walking by.
"My God, what kind of monster is that?" Ye Chen's eyes widened as he stared through the crack. He knew monsters existed in this world, but he hadn't expected to run into one so soon.
Outside, a humanoid creature was making its way toward the kitchen. It was tall and powerfully built. Its face was shrouded in shadow, but Ye Chen could still see its protruding fangs.
The man's fingernails were extremely long. Ye Chen saw how thick the hand gripping something was, then looked down at his own hands. For the first time, he realized just how powerless his mortal body was by comparison.
