Every generation of Miko had nearly always died on the path to sealing the demons. Yet even so, the demons' power continued to recover day by day. The Miko's seal could only slow that recovery.

And yet generation after generation of Miko still came forward, offering up their lives.

The other countries had no better way to deal with demons like these. They, too, had suffered from the demons' depredations back then, but had been helpless against them. After all, their powers had no effect whatsoever on such supernatural creatures.

Since a Miko could suppress the demons, they could rest easy. All they had to do was provide the Land of Demons with supplies.

In truth, the Land of Demons had not been a country at first. It had been nothing more than an altar for sealing demons. Out of sympathy for the hardships the Miko endured to seal them, people gradually volunteered to serve her.

More and more people came, and little by little, the place began to expand.

Where there were people, communities arose. Under the Miko's protection, they gradually began to settle down and raise families there.

To escape the demons, the neighboring countries had voluntarily set aside a large stretch of land for them to live on. After several generations of effort, the Land of Demons came into being.

As one of the first families to serve the Miko, the Wise Family held a position in the Land of Demons second only to hers.

More importantly, the previous Miko's seal had developed problems. This generation's Miko, Zijing, was busy repairing it, so she had entrusted all the Land of Demons' affairs, great and small, to the families who served her.

Because of this, the Wise Family's standing in the Land of Demons had risen steadily. And
