Background / History

Sun Wukong was born from a crack in Flower-Fruit Mountain and originally had no name. Though mocked by mortals when he entered a city, his kind nature kept him from harming them; he instead left for the mountains in shame and frustration. There, he encountered Su Mu, whom he mistook for an immortal because of Su Mu’s sudden appearance and extraordinary bearing. 213

Seeking immortality, Wukong asked Su Mu to teach him Daoist arts. Su Mu chose to alter the monkey’s destined path by imparting Chaos Power, a technique designed for a path of overwhelming force and defiance of heaven. The inheritance immediately elevated Wukong beyond ordinary mortals, though it initially lacked offensive and transformation techniques. 214

Wukong later reached the Cave of the Slanting Moon and Three Stars, where Patriarch Bodhi accepted him as a disciple and gave him the surname Sun and dharma name Wukong. He cultivated there for six years, learned both the Thirty-six Heavenly Dipper Divine Powers and Seventy-two Earthly Fiend Arts, and reached Grand Unity Golden Immortal cultivation. 214 216 218

Heavenly Court Rebellion

After rejecting the humiliating Bimawen post, Wukong becomes Peach Garden guard, consumes the peaches, steals Nine-Turn Golden Elixirs, and reaches Quasi-Saint cultivation. He then confronts Tathagata rather than submitting to the Buddha’s palm trap. 223 224

Battle Against Tathagata

Wukong initially catches Tathagata off guard and suppresses him, but falls behind once Tathagata deploys his treasure formation.
