With a grim expression, Feng Xue put away his Work Card, finally realizing the gravity of the situation.
He didn't understand the peculiarities of the Manager profession, but he had some knowledge of Old Li.
Although this guy seemed like just a Novice Instructor, the fact that he possessed the ability of the [Hermit] Element was enough to show that this person definitely harbored many secrets.
Compared to mere Stealth, the Hermit Element was undoubtedly a higher-tier, advanced item. Yet, now that even Old Li was packing up to leave, the intensity of this search could be imagined.
At the very least, mere Stealth Element would absolutely not protect him.
Old Li didn't know what happened tonight, but Feng Xue was certain it was directly related to the Omen he had killed. Perhaps the local gang wanted to obtain the Phantom of the killed Omen, or perhaps they simply wanted to eliminate unstable factors. Regardless, Feng Xue couldn't just sit and wait for death.
He hadn't ruled out the possibility that they might simply offer him a chance to surrender, but in the end, he couldn't afford to gamble.
He was too weak, lacking power.
While a single "Decomposition Madonna" was somewhat useful against a lone enemy, its disadvantage would become apparent if he were surrounded.
No area-of-effect skills, no crowd control skills, no defensive skills, and even his only movement skill was the Assassin's Step brought by the Assassin Tag. In a sense, the current Feng Xue was like a Phantom Assassin without Blink Strike or Battle Fury; he'd basically be a guaranteed kill in a team fight.
Escape!
Once his thoughts were clear, Feng Xue knew this was his only option. Only by leaving this Landfill Area, leaving the sphere of influence of the local Manager gang, could he have the chance to continue growing.
With his mind made up, Feng Xue immediately opened the Map function on his Work Card, zoomed out, and checked for the Landfill Area closest to his current location.
In fact, he had considered such a possibility long ago after discovering the Map could be zoomed. Now, he was merely making the final decision based on his original plan.
The outer ring of the Infinite City was composed of over a thousand Landfill Areas, each with a radius of a little over three kilometers. Each Landfill Area was roughly the size of a prefecture-level city, and a branch road connected to the main thoroughfare (there were a total of four main thoroughfares in the Infinite City, extending outwards from four large Landfill Areas surrounding the Residential Area).
If he could enter this main thoroughfare, he could safely travel to other branch roads, reaching most of the surrounding Landfill Areas, or head directly to one of the four major Landfill Areas and arrive at the legendary Residential Area.
Although this important branch road was currently monopolized by the Manager gang, the walls of the Landfill Area had no strict requirements for leaving, and as long as one wasn't afraid of the dangers in the wilderness, there was truly no place that couldn't be reached.
From Feng Xue's current Landfill Area, there were three more Landfill Areas within two kilometers after leaving the outer wall. However, Feng Xue still had a sliver of pride as a Golden Finger holder. He didn't intend to head towards the outer Landfill Areas but rather hoped to move in the direction of the Residential Area.
Although he knew that the closer the Landfill Areas were to the Residential Area, the longer they had existed, and the stronger the local Managers would naturally be, this was not enough to deter him.
People strive for higher ground.
With this thought, Feng Xue chose the Landfill Area located to the east and began to prepare his move.
Having only been here for less than twenty days, he didn't have many possessions. His scattered belongings were all packed into his Storage Bag. As his white hood once again concealed his face in shadow, Feng Xue entered a state of low presence once more.
Pushing open the door, Feng Xue immediately heard some noisy sounds. However, it seemed that because the Omen appeared in the east of the city today, the investigation also started from the east, which gave Feng Xue more time to react.
Instead of taking the normal path, Feng Xue climbed onto the roof. Utilizing the lightness of the Assassin Set and the silent effect of the Serene Boots, he moved like an elegant cat, leaping back and forth across the rooftops of the dilapidated slum.
Although most of the houses in the slum were dilapidated, Feng Xue was completely unaffected. In just ten minutes, he had reached the high wall on the west side of the Landfill Area. The entire process was so smooth it surprised him.
Leaving from the west of the city to head to the eastern Landfill Area would undoubtedly involve a much longer detour, but compared to heading to the already sealed-off eastern district, Feng Xue felt the risk was worth it.
With a sound like air escaping, a path opened on the high wall, allowing Feng Xue to exit. Looking at the dark passage, Feng Xue took a deep breath and stepped into it without hesitation...
The passage behind him quietly closed, and Feng Xue found himself in the world outside the city once more. The moment he stepped out from the city walls, the biting cold wind made Feng Xue realize something was different.
Unlike the interior of the Landfill Area, which seemed to be regulated by central air conditioning with almost no temperature variation, the wilderness outside the high walls had distinct temperature changes. He looked up slightly, gazing at the pale blue full moon overhead, and felt a touch of emotion in his heart—there were no moons in the Landfill Area.
Or rather, the sky of the Landfill Area was a giant dome. The so-called blue sky and white clouds were merely illusions projected onto a screen.
The top of the high wall that Feng Xue saw was also just a projected illusion. However, this was not difficult to guess. After all, if the high wall was truly just high, how could it defend against an Omen with flight capabilities?
Having witnessed the "truth" of the Landfill Area, Feng Xue didn't have much time to dwell on it. He glanced around and then moved along the wall towards his destination.
Although the environment outside was more realistic than the interior of the Landfill Area, the silence devoid of any insect chirps or bird calls still made his scalp tingle.
Of course, he now knew that the reason for the lack of sound wasn't an ambush nearby, but rather that there were no living creatures in the wilderness outside the Landfill Area except for Omens (let's consider Omens as living creatures for now). Even those things that looked like trees and forests were merely False Things with the appearance of plants.
They didn't grow, they didn't wither; they simply stood there with the appearance of vegetation.
Walking through this dead, wild land, Feng Xue felt an unprecedented loneliness. In less than twenty days, Feng Xue had left his comfort zone for the second time, which was quite frustrating for a former shut-in.
Just as Feng Xue was indulging in a rare moment of sentimentality, faint footsteps reached his ears.
Although the sound was extremely faint, it was remarkably clear in the vast, silent wilderness.
Feng Xue took a deep breath, reached up to adjust his hood, and confirmed he was still in Stealth mode before continuing forward. However, what entered his vision next was not the expected Omen or a Corpse Collector out at night, but rather, a field of farmland
