Background / History

Hundred Tales grew into the leading power of the Infinite City over decades by rooting itself in Eastern Country culture and monopolizing the resources needed for Nothingness and Supernatural Tales to develop. Its name came from its annual Hundred Tales Ritual, held during the Eastern Country-wide Midsummer Night Festival. 136 250 404

The organization used the festival to bypass ordinary role-playing and directly grant Supernatural Tale Entries to the Unborn. The ritual also produced free-floating cognition, which made Primordial Supernatural Tales easier to awaken. From July onward, Hundred Tales concentrated on killing powerful Primordial Supernatural Tales and having its members devour weaker ones. 250

Its expansion depended on controlling the Infinite City's Landfill Areas and Residential Area. By monopolizing resources and technology, it forced weaker Nothingness to survive on what it distributed, preserving its own dominance while deepening the system's dependence on it. 202 404

By 2015, Hundred Tales was preparing for conflict with Real Worlders after Eastern Country humans developed weapons capable of fighting ordinary Supernatural Tales. It was simultaneously threatened by resistance groups, Kamen Riders, and Feng Xue's rapidly developing Supernatural Tales. 283 308 314

During the Midsummer Night Festival confrontation, the organization revealed Yamata no Orochi as its ultimate weapon. Feng Xue destroyed the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons Picture, the foundation of Hundred Tales' accumulated power. Qingxingdeng subsequently devoured nearly all remaining members, ending Hundred Tales as a unified organization. 400 402 405

Midsummer Night Festival

Hundred Tales members could enter the Eternal World through an Executive's accompanying Phantom, Torii. The Eternal World separated humans and “gods” conceptually: Supernatural Tales could coexist with humans while remaining unseen. 289

• They could attack only when their own rules were fulfilled or when meeting a “fated person” capable of seeing them.

Sky Tower and the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons Picture

The Sky Tower served as the central site of Hundred Tales' creation and inheritance rituals. Regional ceremonies mainly inherited already-awakened Supernatural Tales, while Sky Tower was used to create or awaken new ones. 394

The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons Picture recorded the organization's Supernatural Tales. When the [Boss] Supernatural Tale vanished completely, its image disappeared from the scroll—the first known loss of a fully formed Hundred Tales member from the picture. 384

Downfall

Feng Xue infiltrated Hundred Tales by breaking the Phantom Choice Cane and swearing allegiance to Shuten Doji. The cane prevented members from taking hostile action against him, allowing him to observe Sky Tower's central ritual despite their suspicion. 394

During the Midsummer Night Festival, Hundred Tales used its remaining members, accumulated cognition, and stored Supernatural Tale remnants to manifest Yamata no Orochi. Feng Xue fought the creature and burned the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons Picture, severing the foundation of the organization's accumulated system. 400 402

After the battle, Qingxingdeng devoured most Hundred Tales members. Great Tengu, Tamamo-no-Mae, and a small number of others survived, but they could no longer maintain control of the Residential Area or peripheral Landfill Areas. Rival organizations and local forces moved quickly to dismantle the remnants of Hundred Tales' monopoly. 405 408

Legacy

• The collapse ended Hundred Tales' control over the Eastern Country's Supernatural Tale ecosystem, but it did not eliminate the country's deeper “everything has a spirit” cultural foundation. 657
