With Old Ge absent, the New Recruit Camp had only two surviving squad leaders trying to keep things under control. But their words carried about as much weight as a fart.

The only reason the two squad leaders had managed to hold people back was by warning them in no uncertain terms that if they left the base—or even broke camp and fled—the invaders would kill them like chickens, and the Guard Camp and the other camps wouldn't let them off either.

After all, the base had an explicit rule: fleeing was tantamount to betraying the base, a crime punishable by death!

No one wanted to stay here and wait to die, but no one wanted to be sentenced to death on the spot, either. As a result, most of the New Recruit Camp was tormented by this conflicting state of mind.

If Old Ge hadn't been wounded, at least they would still have had someone to rally around.

Old Tang's arrival was like pulling the rug out from under a boiling pot. The roiling water settled at once. Steam still rose, but at least the turmoil was contained.
