Seeing the chess piece settle into place smoothly, Chen Lin's spirits lifted.
As long as he could place it, it had to serve some purpose.
But before he could examine it closely, he felt a faint pain from the Reverse Scale at the back of his neck. Then the node shuddered violently.
An Ash Ray shot straight toward him!
He was badly startled.
He hurriedly leaped into the air, using the Reverse Scale to meet it.
That was his only means of dealing with it.
The ash ray was hazy and its attack was not particularly powerful. The Reverse Scale blocked it easily.
Yet Chen Lin's expression kept shifting.
He had not expected using the chess piece to cause such a reaction. He had been somewhat rash.
But there was no other way to test its effects. Only by transforming into a destiny fish could he activate the piece; he could not operate it as a mere observer.
So this was an attack he would inevitably have to endure.
After checking his body and finding nothing amiss, Chen Lin began examining the node.
The piece had landed directly ahead of the old cultivator's fish. The node there had originally been rather dark, carrying a strong aura of danger.
He had placed the piece with its white side facing up.
Now the dangerous aura had vanished, replaced by a faint cluster of colorful radiance.
This gave Chen Lin food for thought.
It seemed the chess game manifested by this piece was much like the situation in the Lake of Destiny. The piece's function was to change a node's state.
With its white side facing up, it could resolve calamities.
If the black side faced up, it would presumably destroy opportunities or increase the severity of calamities.
At this thought, Chen Lin
