Ch. 221The Scarecrow
Key events
- Chen Lin and Feng Kuocheng discover a hidden chamber in the spirit-stone mine: four patterned pillars suspend a sealed stone coffin by chains. Chen refuses to open it and asks True Person He for help.
- True Person He declines, telling Chen to handle the matter himself. Chen orders the tunnel sealed and plans to consult a Formation Master, while Feng offers support.
- The next day, the four early Qi Refinement cultivators who fell into the mine are missing. Each has apparently been replaced in his bed by a human-sized scarecrow.
- Chen and Feng inspect the scarecrows. A puppet dismantles one without triggering anything unusual, and a tracking beast cannot follow the missing cultivators’ scent beyond places they had worked.
- Chen orders a distant check of the coffin; the mine appears unchanged. With no answers, he sends everyone away and says he will investigate.
- That night, as Chen sleeps, the same strange aura surrounding the scarecrows begins emanating from his body.
Character developments and interactions
- Chen Lin is cautious and pragmatic, repeatedly refusing to approach the coffin or act on curiosity alone. Though unsettled by the scarecrows, he tries to explain them as a deception and takes charge of the investigation. His concern about the consequences reflects how much he values his secure position and life in Silver Immortal City.
- Feng Kuocheng respects Chen’s judgment and offers manpower, partly out of genuine concern and partly because maintaining a good relationship with a capable pill refiner may prove useful. He shares Chen’s alarm as the mystery deepens.
- True Person He is distant and unwilling to intervene, underscoring Chen’s limited standing despite his useful skills and connection to the Silver Fairy.
- The miners and cultivators grow frightened, while Chen’s orders attempt to contain the panic.
Significant themes
- The limits of rational explanation: The scarecrows defy Chen’s experience, and ordinary investigation yields no answers.
- Caution versus responsibility: Chen avoids disturbing the coffin but cannot simply ignore a danger that may threaten the city or his position.
- Isolation and vulnerability: He must manage the crisis with little support, and the final scene suggests he may already be affected by the same force behind the scarecrows.
