Ch. 21A predicament with no solution
Key plot points
- Chen Lin negotiates for his life by agreeing to refine a Blood Demon Pill, provided Yu Yuehai swears an Inner Demon Oath not to harm him and to protect him afterward. Yu agrees.
- To conceal his unusual pill-making ability, Chen asks to work alone. Yu permits it but secretly places a tracking mark on him and warns him not to leave the courtyard.
- Chen recognizes the dilemma: success could help Yu master the dangerous Blood Demon Technique and become much harder to escape, while failure would likely provoke Yu to kill him. With no good option, he decides to stall.
- He studies the Blood Demon Pill’s formula. It requires live-extracted blood essence from a second-rank-or-higher demonic beast. The pill enables rapid advancement through the Blood Demon Technique, but apparently at the cost of lifespan and possibly the user’s humanity.
- After delaying overnight, Chen begins refining. Unfamiliar with the proper Pill Cauldron, he loses control of the mana and destroys the first batch of ingredients in an explosion.
- Outside, Yu’s female junior—Shuiyue Pavilion’s proprietor—questions whether Chen can succeed. Yu admits he has failed dozens of times himself and is relying on Chen because his remaining demonic-beast blood essence is limited.
Character developments and interactions
- Chen Lin stays outwardly compliant but remains wary and resourceful. He treats the oath as no guarantee of safety, looks for chances to escape, and uses delay and privacy to protect himself.
- Yu Yuehai is desperate to obtain the pill. Though he honors Chen’s request for a private workspace, he maintains control through the tracking mark and close surveillance.
- The female proprietor doubts Chen’s ability after hearing the first batch fail and challenges Yu’s confidence in him. Yu explains that he has few alternatives, despite his own experience and wealth.
Significant themes
- Survival under coercion: Chen must choose between dangerous success and likely punishment for failure.
- Trust and control: The oath offers limited protection, while Yu’s tracking mark reveals the continuing imbalance of power.
- The cost of advancement: The Blood Demon Technique promises to bypass cultivation bottlenecks but may consume lifespan and alter the practitioner’s nature.
- Appearances versus ability: Chen’s apparent inexperience with a proper cauldron contrasts with the confidence Yu places in his past pill-making results.
