The car keys and a bottle of insect-repellent perfume.
This insect-repellent perfume might be very useful to me. There were lots of mosquitoes in summer—who knew whether they carried the virus? But once they bit someone, the chance of infection would be far too high!
"Thanks..."
I said faintly to the woman's corpse sprawled on the floor, then unceremoniously pocketed the bottle of insect-repellent perfume.
After tucking it away, I picked up the flashlight that had just fallen to the floor and looked toward the inner room...
The three shadows cast in that room were entirely... projected from one person—no, from one corpse.
The corpse hanging... in the inner room.
I was already quite close to the inner room, only a dozen or so meters away. Though I could not see clearly, I could make out someone... hanging themselves from the wall, apparently using a very thick rope.
"Suicide?"
I muttered to myself. At last, I relaxed. Looking at the car keys I had just taken out, I thought for a moment before pressing the button!
Beep beep~~
Accompanied by the sound of unlocking, a burst of light suddenly lit up behind me. I hurriedly turned around. Although I knew perfectly well that it was the car lock being opened by the keys in my hand, a chill still ran through my whole body!
But... when I saw the vehicle clearly, much of the cold that had seeped through me was driven away!
That was...
"A pickup?!"
I never expected such an unexpected windfall. Not only had I found a motorcycle, I had even gotten my hands on a pickup... Such good fortune had actually fallen right into my lap.
Could it be... that my luck had finally turned?
"Strange... a woman driving a pickup?" I lowered my head to glance at the corpse on the floor, unable to hide my surprise. A rugged vehicle like a pickup was clearly better suited to a pure manly man like m—
Fine, let's just pretend I never thought that!
"Now that I have a pickup... I should check on the motorcycle first. I wonder if that bike is even here..."
As I spoke, I headed toward the inner room. Though the corpse had died by hanging, I still felt an eerie sense of dread.
After all, as someone from Hua Nation, I still harbored a deep fear of ghosts, gods, and such things.
Only after entering the inner room did I discover that it was filled entirely with motorcycles. Every motorcycle had its own little separate stall.
Clatter~
I took out my keys and counted them, discovering that I had five sets in total...
My house keys, the keys to Big Brother Liu's place next door, the keys belonging to Li Jiahui and Wang Lin, and the pickup keys of the woman I had just picked up from the floor.
Chapter 41: Damn Fingerprint Verification
After searching around, I finally found the keys to that Yamaha. I pressed the button, and right afterward, accompanied by a series of beeps, the motorcycle engine roared to life, its sound suddenly echoing through the pitch-black underground parking lot!
Vroooom~~~~
"Automatic ignition?"
Sure enough, rich people really were something else... The equipment was so advanced I could barely understand it!
I walked over to the little stall filled with the thunderous roar of the motorcycle engine starting up, only to find its door shut, with a button beside it...
"This... is actually a rolling shutter door?!"
My face immediately went blank.
"Was that really necessary?! A motorcycle parking lot, and every space had to be its own private stall? More importantly... what the hell was with the rolling shutters?! How was I supposed to open them?!"
"Does this button... still have power?"
After hesitating for a moment, I tried pressing the switch. The next second, the rolling shutter's motor suddenly made a series of "clack clack" sounds. Before my disbelieving eyes, it slowly began to rise!
"There's actually still electricity?!"
I could hardly believe it, but faced with... that slowly rising rolling shutter, I was left speechless!
"Where... is this power even coming from?!"
Suspiciously, I looked at the rolling shutter's motor. A wire ran from it along the wall to a junction box, then... disappeared into the ceiling.
"Is it... connected up there?"
Seeing this, I suddenly thought of my solar backpack... Though it had originally belonged to Big Brother Liu next door, that wasn't the point! The point was... that backpack had a solar charging function!
"Could it be... that all the rolling shutters in this underground parking lot are connected to solar panels?"
The more I thought about it, the more likely it seemed. After all... no area could guarantee that it would never lose power. Once there was an outage, these rolling shutters would be completely useless. In that situation, cars couldn't get out, and the residents couldn't leave—it would be terribly inconvenient.
On the other hand, with solar charging panels, at the very least... the cars could get out and temporarily escape the blackout.
"City people really know how to play."
With a helpless sigh, I shone my flashlight toward... that Yamaha.
Its streamlined body gleamed metallic gray. Its modified headlights were like a demon's face, and its endless, galloping roar made me fall in love with it at first sight!
"Tsk tsk! Now... this bike is mine!"
Now that I had the bike, I wasn't in such a hurry anymore. After all... it would take less than ten minutes to ride home from here. Only then did I have the time to turn around and inspect the corpse hanging behind me, casually pressing the key switch in my hand.
The Yamaha's roar behind me gradually faded. The corpse before me had already died, yet it still sent a wave of lingering fear through me.
Most importantly, this man's feet... had already changed shape!!
They were no longer... human feet. His lower body had transformed into something like an octopus, soft and limp as it dragged across the ground. At that moment, his body was covered in horrifying maggots, constantly crawling in and out. The nauseating stench made me pinch my nose shut.
"Is this... a new kind of mutation?!"
I examined him from top to bottom. Clearly, this man had hanged himself after the mutations began.
My flashlight slowly swept upward along those tentacles. I saw the man's thing, as expected, though it still left me helpless. It seemed that as long as a creature mutated, it retained its male characteristics. I just wondered what mutated female creatures would look like.
Further up, the man was wearing a security guard's uniform. The blue clothes were unmistakable. Above that, a rope hung from the bracket above the Iron Gate. Had this person... hanged himself like that?
Wait... something was very strange.
This man had actually died while mutating. In other words... he had still retained his sanity at the time?!
No wonder... there weren't any Zombies in this underground parking lot...
They had probably been scared away by this monster, right?
Could a dead monster still possess a certain degree of intimidation?
But why hadn't that Gecko monster scared the Zombies away? After all... the neighborhood where the Gecko monster was located was only one street away from mine.
Perhaps... not every monster drove away the Zombies within its territory.
That meant... the presence or absence of Zombies could no longer serve as a definitive indicator of whether there were monsters!
If there were no Zombies... one could basically be certain there was a Mutant Monster, but if there were Zombies, there was no way to determine whether a Mutant Monster was present!
"This fucking world really is a terrible place!"
After cursing under my breath, I looked once more at the man hanging before me, who had killed himself. I admired him.
You had to know, suicide took tremendous courage too.
Forget about those who jumped off buildings—most of them were just making a scene, trying to blow things up. People who truly wanted to die were not easily stopped by anyone.
But... the courage to face death head-on was something ordinary people found hard to possess.
And this security guard before me would rather kill himself than become a monster. His resolve was far greater than mine!
Right now, all I wanted was to survive. If I really turned into a monster... would I truly have the courage to kill myself?
I wasn't sure, but I had thought about it too...
