I froze, took the slippers, set them on the floor, and slipped them on. They fit pretty well.
After trying them out, I walked into the room and instinctively looked for a third person.
"No need to look... My wife died in childbirth three years ago. She left me Zhang Cun and went on alone."
Zhang Min gave a bitter smile and shook his head. Then he looked down at Zhang Cun and stroked his little head.
"I'm sorry... I didn't know."
"It's all right. Come in."
Zhang Min led me inside and pointed to a spare bedroom.
"No one uses that room. If you don't mind, you can stay there for now."
"Thanks. All I need is somewhere to sleep."
"Heh, no need to be so polite. We're in the same boat, both descendants of the Chinese people."
Hah! Zhang Min sure knew what to say.
He had a line for everything.
I looked around, then headed for the room Zhang Min had shown me. The place had three bedrooms and two living areas, and the rooms were a decent size.
Everything was neatly arranged. It looked
spotless, and nothing seemed to be missing.
"Wait here a moment. I'll make some tea."
As he spoke, Zhang Min went over to the living room sofa, picked up a rectangular object from the table, and pressed it toward the opposite wall.
A section of the wall suddenly rose, revealing a huge screen. It lit up, showing
a channel-selection menu. Then a picture appeared!
That's right... It was the familiar picture of a familiar television. What I couldn't believe was that it wasn't running through some sort of player
or a DVD. It was using a set-top box?!
There was a signal!?
