There was a term in Buddhism: ichitan, also known as yichantika. It could be translated as "lacking faith," meaning one who did not believe in the Buddha Dharma. Yet the original meaning of ichitan was someone with desires.
Those who could not become Buddhas because they harbored desires, or whose day of Buddhahood lay in the infinitely distant future, were called ichitan.
Then could an ichitan become a Buddha?
Perhaps they could, perhaps they could not. In any case, Adam had yet to see an ichitan become a Buddha.
As for Adam himself... whether Buddhism, Daoism, or any other path, none of the paths he walked could truly be called orthodox. The path he truly walked was his own, so strictly speaking, he held no value as a reference for others.
But... even if one could not become a Buddha, was the path of ichitan not still a path? Could it not yield true fruition?
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva still desired to deliver the empty hells. That was a great vow, but it was also a desire.
Those who, out of compassion, harbored such desires that could never truly be fulfilled were likewise ichitan. They were called Bodhisattva Ichitan, also known as Great Compassion Ichitan or Achandika.
