Tidal Wave of Acromantulas

"You're right, Bernard, spiders are indeed unlikely to be bulletproof."

Eugene, or rather, Wizards in general, don't really grasp the power of bullets, but Adam does.

"But you also have to consider the size difference between a bullet and a spider. One bullet might not kill that big guy outright, but it could drive it crazy."

As Bernard pulled out a white phosphorus grenade, ready to retort, Adam added:

"From what I know, there's only one type of spider that grows to that size: a magical creature called the Acromantula. They can usually grow up to fifteen feet tall."

Bernard fell silent, mentally estimating how tall fifteen feet was.

"Moreover, these creatures are usually social, with small groups numbering in the dozens or hundreds, and larger groups potentially numbering in the thousands. Given the ecological conditions of the Forbidden Forest..."

Bernard put away the white phosphorus grenade:

"Ahem, perhaps we should turn back. This direction seems a bit dangerous."

Uther, Klon, and Eugene all nodded in agreement.

As the saying goes, knowing there's a tiger on the mountain, one shouldn't knowingly walk towards it. There's no reason to push forward when you know there are a lot of dangerous creatures ahead. What would be the point?

However, after walking for a while, Adam suddenly stopped everyone:

"Wait a moment."

Facing their puzzled looks, Adam sighed:

"It seems we discovered it too late..."

After Adam finished speaking, the surroundings fell silent. Without the sound of their footsteps, the rustling noises coming from all directions suddenly became clear.

"Have we been discovered?"

"Maybe we were discovered a long time ago? Perhaps we touched a spiderweb? Or maybe it's simply because we've entered their territory and are being treated as prey – a fifteen-foot-tall spider can't possibly rely solely on waiting for food to come to its web."

Everyone's faces were grim as they gripped their wands tightly.

"Spiders should be afraid of fire, right?"

Adam gripped the Wand of Darkness, looking around:

"Let me try something..."

A huge magic circle unfolded on the ground, centered around Adam's feet, but it wasn't noticed because of the humus covering the ground. Only the Acromantulas lying in ambush seemed to sense the danger, and the rustling footsteps faltered for a moment.

"This is my first time trying something like this. If it doesn't work, I'll have to rely on the Tree Card..."

Adam waved the Wand of Darkness in his hand, and magic power surged into the magic circle under his feet, flowing into the tall trees around them.

To the astonishment of Klon and the others, the surrounding trees suddenly began to move like animals, swaying their branches. The roots, buried deep in the ground, grew wildly, causing the soil to churn and spread outwards –

The next moment, chilling roars came from all directions.

"Those, are those all Acromantulas?"

Klon's face was a little pale.

"What kind of magic is this?"

Uther's face was also slightly pale, but he still looked at Adam in surprise.

"Tree Card, able to manipulate trees."

Adam's expression was serious. There were far more Acromantulas around than he had imagined. It was his first time manipulating multiple trees at the same time, let alone such a large number. It wasn't an easy task for him.

The roars grew closer and closer. The trees in the Forbidden Forest were incredibly tall, almost completely blocking out the sunlight above, so even in the afternoon they could only vaguely see many clawing shadows behind the trees.

Perhaps they were tree roots activated by Adam's magic, or perhaps they were the legs of Acromantulas, but Klon and the others hoped it was the former.

"Careful!"

Suddenly, a spider climbed onto a tree, and then jumped down the trunk several times, landing not far in front of them and pouncing!

"Ah – Shield Charm!"

"Thunderbolt Explosion!"

Klon screamed and threw out a Shield Charm, but Uther, who was behind him, threw a blasting curse at the big spider with a pale face. The Acromantula's head, about the size of a basketball, instantly exploded into fragments in the firelight.

"There are far more of these big spiders than I imagined!"

Adam frowned and gritted his teeth.

Hundreds? Thousands? Adam wasn't sure, but he knew that the Tree Card sensed Acromantulas everywhere within its range. Had they unknowingly walked near the Acromantulas' nest?

"Adam, don't push yourself too hard."

Taking a couple of deep breaths to calm his racing heart, Uther looked around:

"You don't have to stop them all. You can let some through, just tell me the direction. I can handle one or two at a time!"

"I can help too."

Eugene, who was staring in another direction and hadn't reacted, said in a deep voice, "Because of my parents, I know a few self-defense spells."

Bernard's face went pale at this sight, and he clenched the white phosphorus grenade in his pocket.

"The Unforgivable Curses are the most heinous spells, but not the most powerful."

While controlling the trees, Adam also spared some energy to pay attention to his surroundings. Seeing the spider being dealt with, he breathed a sigh of relief. Noticing Bernard's condition, he took a half step back and whispered in his ear, "Wizards have been able to exist in this world until now not just by isolating themselves from the world. Don't be too superstitious about the power of technology."

Bernard glanced at Adam and nodded.

"East!"

Adam suddenly reminded them.

"Which way is east?"

"Reducto!"

Eugene blasted away a large part of the Acromantula's body with one spell, and then followed up with two more Reducto Curses to kill the unbalanced Acromantula.

Uther glanced at Klon, who was still dazed, and shook his head, also unable to distinguish between north, south, east, and west without a reference point. "Those who are capable of dealing with Acromantulas should each be responsible for a fixed direction. That way it's easier for Adam to give reminders!"

"Okay."

Eugene nodded.

"I know the Freezing Charm, which should be able to delay the Acromantulas a bit."

A few blushes appeared on Klon's pale face. He originally thought it was pretty good for a first-year student to have this ability, but looking at the others...
