Marriage was one of the common methods used to cement relationships. Family ties, friendship, love—any kind of emotion could bind people together. Compared with the conditions needed to cultivate familial affection or friendship, however, marriage was a convenient method: people could marry first, then use that special relationship to forcibly tie two people together. Strangers could not develop family ties or friendship overnight, but getting married was easy.
