Life and Death

"Watch your step." Shangguan Xi stepped in front of the female Player and shouted. Sure enough, the woman, who had been running, stumbled forward as if she'd slipped. Now she was surrounded: Shangguan Xi and his two companions stood in front of her, while Xu Huo was behind her. Four against one. There wasn't much point in running, so she stopped to negotiate:

"Come on, we've never had any grudge against each other. There's no need to kill us all!"

Her gaze darted around in alarm, but Shangguan Xi and the others were just as confused about what was going on.

Xu Huo had struck too suddenly. They were teammates, of course, so they had to help him no matter what the reason was. But by the time they reacted, he'd already exchanged two blows with the bald man. Everything had happened too fast. Like the bald man and his companions, their hands and feet couldn't quite keep up. By the time they'd recovered, Xu Huo had already killed someone.

It had all taken little more than ten seconds. They hadn't seen much chance to help, so they'd simply watched from the side. They could join in once the fight became a stalemate.

Unfortunately, Xu Huo hadn't given them that opportunity. The woman's and the bald man's attacks and defenses had been as flimsy as paper; they hadn't been much use at all. It wasn't that their items and Abilities were useless. The limits of the item space, defensive abilities, and visual interference could all be useful in a fight. But Xu Huo's spatial restrictions and mental interference were clearly a level above theirs. Without an overwhelming advantage in speed and combat ability, the outcome had been inevitable.
