The man sat on a single sofa to one side.
Child's Mom did not sit beside the mushroom-headed little girl.
Instead, she took a small stool and sat opposite the mushroom-headed little girl.
Child's Mom wanted to talk to the child face-to-face.

She felt as if the atmosphere had returned to what it had been on the way home earlier.
