Ch. 581Born in the Year of the Tiger
Key plot points
- Eleven women aligned with Ye Qiu intervene after the Examination Elder is exposed for taking benefits from Zhang Chuan’s group and abusing his authority. They drop their complaints against Ye Qiu but insist the elder answer for his misconduct. Chen Chi orders him imprisoned, and he accepts responsibility rather than risk involving his family.
- The remaining examiners realize they, too, had accepted bribes. Relieved that Ye Qiu joined Old Liu’s line, they resolve not to provoke him. His examiner, despite judging his talent to be a worthless Mortal Body, praises him and lets the assessment proceed without further scrutiny.
- Ye Qiu heads for Myriad Laws Academy with Chen Chi and the others. Li Xingchen and Tang Yan follow, joking about Ye Qiu’s influence and Tang Yan’s plan to call on his “tigress” sister.
- Ye Qiu is awed by the Academy’s scale: its many peaks, buildings, and arenas are only the outer edge. Mu Qinghe explains that the Academy contains numerous branches, each comparable to a major sect.
- Ye Qiu presses Mu Qinghe to repay money he says he is owed. She promises to handle any trouble he faces, but reveals that his conspicuous Dao Rain has attracted attention from powerful organizations, including the Great Dao Academy, the Sword Sect, and the Dragon Clan. Ye Qiu distrusts her assurance; she says she will return his money if she cannot manage the situation.
Character developments and interactions
- Ye Qiu remains wary and pragmatic. He recognizes the examiner’s flattery as self-preservation and challenges Mu Qinghe both over the money and her reliability.
- The Examination Elder is forced to face the consequences of exploiting his office. His regret underscores his earlier mistake: he assumed Ye Qiu had no powerful backing.
- Chen Chi and the eleven women demonstrate their influence by shielding Ye Qiu and holding the elder accountable.
- Mu Qinghe acts as Ye Qiu’s protector and guide, but their conversation suggests an uneasy, transactional relationship: she admits taking money and promises to deal with the fallout from his growing notoriety.
- Li Xingchen and Tang Yan provide comic relief. They resent Ye Qiu’s apparent success with the women but admit they cannot safely challenge him.
Significant themes
- Power over justice: The chapter observes that connections and strength, rather than fairness, often determine who faces consequences.
- Hidden backing and shifting status: Ye Qiu’s treatment changes once others realize he is supported by formidable allies.
- Reputation and scrutiny: His unusual Dao Rain has drawn attention from major powers, foreshadowing further complications.
- Humor amid danger: The banter about Ye Qiu, Tang Yan’s “tigress” sister, and Mu Qinghe’s promise to repay him lightens the political tension.
