The Universe Is So Scary

Jaeger Sobek still remembered it very clearly: he hadn't liked the universe, even back then.

The Tirillo had always called themselves "conquerors of the starry skies" and "the chosen people of the stars." The Sobek family had once been one of the most noble houses among the Tirero Military Aristocrats. Every generation of Jaegers was supposed to take pride in their family name and history. Everyone in the Jaeger family, men and women alike, was supposed to love the far reaches of the cosmic sea.

But Jaeger Sobek really didn't like the universe.

He was just a boy who had grown up on a planet called New Misa, in the Divine Grace Colonial Sector.

When he was still young enough to celebrate Children's Day, one cold winter night, he had bundled himself in a thick down jacket and ridden on his father's shoulders as he gazed at the sky. He saw the magnificent, snow-covered mountains undulating along the horizon, but he also saw the bleak, oppressive darkness hanging above the snowline, as though an abyss were slowly devouring the world's only patch of pure white.

If that boundless darkness could devour the magnificent mountains, how could his small body possibly withstand it? If a demon really reached out an invisible giant hand from the abyss, how could he fight it?

The terror made his skin crawl. He could only cling tightly to his father's neck.

But his father was too far removed from his feelings to understand. In a gentle yet stern voice, he simply taught him, "Listen, little Jaeger. Our home lies beyond the cosmic sea! You must restore the Sobek family. We should have followed the Dragon of Dawn and conquered the universe!"

His grandfather had taught his father the same way, and his father had taught him.
