Within Unity Fortress, the flames of war still burned. The first Earth forces to launch an attack on the Empire were units of the Varangian Division and Hell's Paratrooper Division, fresh from their recent victory on Onomia. They had just won a battle and successfully stripped the Empire of its aura of invincibility. Their morale was soaring.
It was only the Empire, after all. It wasn't as if they'd never fought them before! We'd been beating them senseless on the grasslands of Onomia!
With that mindset, the Earthlings launched a truly fierce, storm-like assault.
Under Lieutenant Colonel Winter's command, two battalions of Hell's Paratrooper Division maneuvered around the enemy and nearly wiped out an entire Imperial regiment. Though it was a regiment of "collaborators" composed almost entirely of Angmangsi and Enbu, it was still a small force encircling a much larger one, and a glorious victory by any measure. More importantly, a breach had opened in the Empire's defensive line.
Then two regiments of the Varangian Division, tasked with the main assault, began a bayonet charge under Colonel Moshaf, the division's bravest officer. They charged with a bewildering "Ura!" and, after suffering considerable casualties, killed more than three times as many enemies as they had lost. Then, once again, they advanced to the vicinity of Central Station.
Had the soldiers of the "Direwolf Regiment," newly honored by King Soren, not fought back to the death, the entire defensive line might have collapsed.
...But that was as far as they could go.
The fortress was indeed enormous. Its interior could easily accommodate a giant space city of twenty or thirty million people. But on a battlefield, those bright, spacious compartments—large enough to fit an entire Skyreach Court—and those railways wide enough for a 787 to pass through became winding and convoluted.
