The "Emperor" he'd encountered in his mental treasury, who had forced him to jump out a window, had been far more expressive in both face and movement. But even that one wouldn't have lasted a single exchange against these expressionless counterparts.

Yu Lian burst out laughing and slammed a fist into the face of the "Emperor" at the front. The space around him groaned under the strain. His foe and weapon were sent flying backward by the blow, his body cracking apart in midair like a smashed porcelain doll.
His body turned to bloody fragments, while the weapon in his hand became gray mist and scattered down to the ground.
Yu Lian felt that he'd understood something else.
But then, weapons came at him from every direction: three spears of light, two spiral impact lances, four greatswords, and three battle-axes. Not a single gap in their assault.
They struck the psionic defense curtain Yu Lian had already spread around himself and did not harm Lan Jiufeng at all.
The old man held his sword and had even closed his eyes.
But in
