The beams of light spilling out of the array diagram still shone into the distance, like a longsword pointed at the heavens, plunging deep into that mass of shadow. At first glance, it looked as though a searchlight beam had reached into an unfathomably deep oceanic whirlpool. Then the light seemed to finally touch something solid. It began to spread in ring after ring until the rings were wide enough for an ordinary person to crawl through.
A spatial ladder? Giafil quickly thought of one possibility.
She was a Starrealm Knight born into a prestigious family, after all, and had seen and heard plenty. She had witnessed masters at the pinnacle of the mystic arts perform operations like this. With such unfathomable mystic techniques, top-tier psions could achieve the effect of compressing a vast distance into a single step. Of course, this ability had its limits. At most, it could take someone from a planet's surface to a satellite in low orbit. Traveling endlessly through the universe was impossible, and making a physical leap through space was even more so.
Still, in a decisive battle between fleets, this kind of technique let the very best psions pull off unrestricted boarding actions, repeatedly appearing aboard enemy ships and creating scenes of one warrior standing against a thousand. In that situation, unless the opposing side also had a psion of the same level, no matter how large their forces were, they would truly have no way to deal with an enemy who defied common sense.
Looking more closely, the beam did seem to have that quality. But Giafil wasn't entirely sure. Besides, this was a strange place where truth and falsehood were indistinguishable, where reality and illusion blurred together. The beam of light reached into the distant shadows, but the gray mist
