It wasn't that they had gotten faster; time itself had become turbulent, wiping out the time spent traversing a stretch of distance. In other words, time along that stretch had vanished.
That stretch of time had coincided with the clash between the River of Time and the Eternal Life Realm beast's arm.
The Eternal Life Realm beast had thrown the Heavenly Origin Universe's time into disarray. It was similar to when Zhaoran had reversed time, but not quite the same.
