He could have looked through them without alerting the families, but that would have been unethical. They were all part of the Human Civilization, and as long as there was no hostility between them, he couldn't bring himself to do it.
Not every family was willing to let Lu Yin read its history. They eventually encountered one that refused.
Old Qiu even tried threatening them, but they still wouldn't agree. So Lu Yin had Old Qiu talk to the family's patriarch—force a conversation and force his way into the man's good graces. After visiting several families and ingratiating himself with them, Old Qiu had gotten quite good at it. The patriarch, however, was another matter.

When he had some free time, he would find that old rival of his and have a chat. He was sure he could talk the man into a breakdown.
