Every reverse-ancient being that entered the Main River of Time risked becoming utterly lost as it traveled toward the unknown, ancient past. Its foothold was a Reverse-Ancient Point. Finding one at the right time was the only way to keep going. Otherwise, no matter how powerful a life-form was, it could not flow upstream forever through its own strength.
Lu Yin had the Flowing Light Boat, which could travel upstream through the River of Time, but it could not do so forever.
Even if it could devour time that did not blend into the River of Time, in theory, the Flowing Light Boat was still being depleted, because most time that did not blend into the River of Time existed in its tributaries, not the main current.
Only by bringing time to a halt could one create time that did not blend into the River of Time. But most life-forms that could do this could only do so within a given universe or civilization. They could not halt time in the Main River of Time, because that would bring time to a stop throughout the entire universe. Who could do that?
Thus, the Flowing Light Boat could travel upstream through tributaries of the River of Time, and it could travel upstream through the Main River
