Spellcasters were inherently far more mobile than ordinary people. They might not run fast, but over long distances, their light logistical needs and ability to take shortcuts gave them an advantage that let them outmaneuver every other kind of troop at crucial moments.

And anyone who wasn't a Transcendent would need someone to continually cast buffs that dispelled and neutralized Negative Energy. The amount of magic power that would consume was unimaginable.

If they didn't take the Shadow Realm, then even a group of just two hundred would need enough supplies to cause a headache. Provisions on that scale couldn't simply be carried by the travelers themselves, and once dedicated transport vehicles were involved, the soldiers in the cities and checkpoints along the way wouldn't be fools.
