Just as one had to cross Twenty Thousand Li of Yellow Sand to get from Zaun to Mount Targon, traveling from the Lakstak Plains to the Great Glacier meant crossing the towering Iceclaw Mountains and then sailing across the Sea of Frost.
For anyone who couldn't fly, it was a difficult journey. The Iceclaw Mountains might not be as famous as the Dragonspine Mountains, but their altitude and brutal climate were both far more extreme.
Worse still, many parts of the Iceclaw Mountains were Lost Ones territory. These deranged shamans, who worshiped the Old Gods and had lost their humanity, were more savage and dangerous than the fiercest beasts. Compared to them, even the man-eating Ice Trolls seemed like little sweethearts.
Ice Trolls might scatter when faced with danger, but the Lost Ones were different. If they came across an opponent they couldn't defeat, they wouldn't just fight to the death—they would also try to summon the power of the Old Gods. And if an Old God deemed their opponent worthy, it would grant the Lost Ones the power of storms and thunder.
So unless they had no other choice, nobody wanted to cross Lost Ones territory.
If this weren't a trial, Ashe actually had a safer route. She could head west through Nuskar Pass, then travel northwest to the Lokfar Peninsula. From there, she could go north into the Sea of Frost and cross it to reach the Great Glacier.
Compared to crossing the Iceclaw Mountains directly, this route was undoubtedly much safer. They would still pass through some remote areas and might run into enemies such as Ice Trolls or tundra wolves, but compared to the Lost Ones, that was nothing.
But this was Anivia's trial, and reaching the Great Glacier was part of it.
