Several hours had passed since the Warp Daemons had burrowed into the shelter hidden along the ancient subway lines and begun their frenzied slaughter.
For now, no one knew how many soldiers and refugees had died in the attack, and no one had stopped to count.
But one thing was certain: faced with the terrifying, relentless onslaught of the Warp Daemons, the human defenders still had no good way to deal with them, just as they hadn't on the surface.
They hadn't been completely routed—not yet. But despite having narrow corridors and other terrain that favored the defenders, they had already lost several residential units and countless refugees. That much was beyond dispute.
If one of the shelter's commanders hadn't acted decisively at the time, ordering the area sealed off and then having the soldiers collapse the only passage leading to the vast chambers of residential units A-106 through A-109, things would have been far worse by now!
The defenders had urgently evacuated the refugees from nearby residential units and sent a large force, along with heavy weapons, to the collapsed passage. They had begun setting up successive defensive lines and guarding the area, but even so, the human troops in the shelter had little hope of holding it.
