The surname Kan ranked near the bottom of the list of the hundred surnames, somewhere around three or four hundred. There were probably only two or three hundred thousand people with the name, so it wasn't particularly common. But even if there weren't many people with it, it was undoubtedly a real surname.
As a surname, it was pronounced kàn, with a fourth tone. As a verb, however, it was pronounced hǎn, with a third tone, as in "kànkàn," "hūhǎn," and "xiāohǎn."
Because of this, there were always some ignorant fools who liked to pronounce it "hānhān," with a first tone. Naturally, that always left people with the surname feeling troubled and annoyed!
