Amid the cries of alarm, Xiadow jolted awake.

To her astonishment, she realized she hadn't been eaten, and she wasn't injured at all. She was lying on the ground, completely unharmed.
"Really? I'm okay?"
Still unable to believe it, Xiadow felt over her body and head again. Sure enough, she was unharmed—and even the clothes that had been torn off her were back on. She couldn't help wondering what was going on.
Then she noticed that everything around her was still exactly as before. She hadn't returned to Dragonbone Village!
As far as she could see, towering walls surrounded the arena, with rows of spectator seats behind them. There wasn't a single spectator, though. The arena floor was paved with rough stone slabs, covered in marks from blades and axes. The air still carried a musty, decaying smell, along with that faint scent of blood.
"How strange!"
"Didn't I just die?"
"Did I come back to life?"
"What's going on?"
Before she could figure out what had happened, or even wonder whether it had all been an illusion, the giant bear appeared in the distance again.

"Damn it!"
Xiadow jolted at the sight. Though she was confused, furious, and unwilling to give up, she gritted her teeth and turned to run.
As she fled, a sudden realization flashed through her eyes.
"Ha!"
"I get it! This must be some kind of hyper-realistic virtual game!"
"Probably!"
"I heard they had those before the apocalypse?"
"That's right!"
"It has to be!"
True to her love of gaming, Xiadow—despite being a terrible player—had almost immediately guessed the truth.
