Preparations for war were in full swing throughout Lordaeron City...
By now, besides squads of Lordaeron's finest heavily armored sword-and-shield soldiers standing guard around the clock atop Lordaeron's walls, there were also rows of calibrated heavy counterweight catapults, dwarven cannons, mortar teams occupying advantageous positions, and vast numbers of archers and arrows.
Behind each of the city's gates, and at set distances behind the walls, stood squad after squad of Lordaeron soldiers awaiting orders. Rows of fully armed knights stood ready to enter the battle at any moment. There were even large numbers of strong refugees who had been issued shields, helmets, and longswords and armed as militia, allowing them to support the city's defense whenever necessary.
Around the city and near the walls, houses at many key locations had been requisitioned and converted into simple watchtowers or fortresses. The tops of tall clock towers and sturdy stone buildings had likewise been transformed into temporary roosts and rest areas for the Gryphon Riders. At that moment, those robust and ferocious flying beasts were waiting there with their riders, ready to take flight at any time.
After three or four days of preparations, the huge city of Lordaeron's capital had gathered a large number of elite troops from the surrounding regions, Gryphon Riders who had come to reinforce them from Aerie Peak, and a great many mages from Dalaran! Including the hastily assembled armed militia, the forces in Lordaeron City had at one point approached the staggering number of fifty thousand. At last, this gave the commanders here the confidence and strength to believe they could defeat the Undead.
Even so, none of Lordaeron's commanders dared suggest leading the army out of the city to fight the Undead in a decisive field battle...
