After seeing Mila off, the group headed to a restaurant together for dinner and drinks.
Yang Xiaoyun had not wanted to go. She felt that Mila was her good friend, and she could not approve of what Xia Lin had done.
But Xia Lin pulled her aside for a private talk that lasted more than ten minutes, and Yang Xiaoyun's attitude softened. Though she was still rather reluctant, she ultimately stayed and went to dinner with everyone.
Naturally, Wang Yan went along with Yang Xiaoyun. His reason was that he could hardly let Yang Xiaoyun go back by herself. Since Yang Xiaoyun stayed, he respected her wishes and did not spoil the mood.
When they reached the restaurant, they ordered a huge tableful of dishes. Soft drinks, beer, and baijiu were all brought out as well.
"Brother Yan is still the impressive one. Us guys just can't get used to baijiu." Lu Tao set down his glass and watched Wang Yan take small sips of baijiu while eating big mouthfuls of food.
Before Wang Yan could speak, Huazi, who was also picking at the dishes beside him, raised his glass. "Hey, look at that. I'm drinking baijiu now too. I'm not like you two, so don't lump me in with you."
There was a hierarchy of disdain when it came to drinking, especially in 2006. Those who drank red wine or foreign liquor sat at the top and looked down on baijiu drinkers; baijiu drinkers looked down on beer drinkers, and beer drinkers naturally disdained them too. Mixed into all that was regional snobbery as well.
It seemed that everything had to form a chain, with one level looking down on the next, just so people could establish some sense of superiority.
For young people, though, most did not like
